DETAILS

Rob takes us for a walk on actively managed family land that is protected by a conservation restriction held by WLCT. We’ll look at evidence of how past land use and natural disturbances have shaped the forest and discuss the role that forestry can play in providing wildlife habitat for a suite of focal species while making forests more resilient in the face of invasive plants, exotic insects, deer browsing, and climate change. Rob will also discuss issues related to carbon storage and sequestration in New England's forests and how managed forests can provide both carbon benefits and local forest products that we all use. For this 2+ mile walk, we’ll start at the parking area with a brief introduction and then walk through the Wildlife Refuge to the forestry management area. We’ll stop along the way to talk about land use, past and present, and current forestry management. Total walk is 2+ miles and will take approximately 2 hours. Parking: • Please park along Old Harbor Road, South of the Refuge parking lot What to Expect: • Wear sturdy, weatherproof shoes • Ticks are out! • We will walk in light rain • About 2 miles in length • Minimal incline • Ground will be wet, with exposed roots and rocks.
